John 21:20-25

Be Still: As I take this moment to pause and reflect, Lord, draw near to me. Fill me with Your Spirit, renew my mind, and speak to my heart.

Read: John 21:20-25

Jesus answered, 'If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?' (v22)

Encounter: We've been talking this week about how Jesus redefines the moment. About how it all started at that defining point of the cross, when the redefining of humanity began. That's the power of the cross – it's such a pivotal point in history. Now, as we reach our final day on this topic, I've been reflecting again on comparisons. It's tempting to look at others and wonder, what's Jesus doing with them or how do I compare?

In today’s passage, we see Peter wrestling with this very issue. After hearing his own unique call from Jesus, he turns to see John following them and asks, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus' response is profound: ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.’ This interaction reminds me that each of us has a unique path and purpose. Our personal relationship with Jesus means that what he asks of me is different from what he asks of you. My bullseye is different from yours, and that's perfectly okay.

Apply: Reflecting on Peter's question, how often do we find ourselves making comparisons? It’s easy to fall into the trap of measuring our journey against others'. Yet, Jesus’ response to Peter encourages us to focus on our own path. Have you ever felt like you were missing the mark because you were too busy comparing yourself to someone else? How can we shift our perspective to embrace the unique journey Jesus has for us?

As you go about your day, think about the bullseye Jesus has set before you. What specific call or purpose do you feel he's placed, personally, on your heart? Are there ways you can stay focused on your unique journey, rather than getting distracted by comparisons? How can you celebrate the differences in your walk with Jesus and see them as strengths rather than shortcomings?

Devote: Jesus, I really want to fulfil your purpose. Help me to focus on the unique path you’ve got for me, always aiming for the mark you have lovingly chosen.
