Ephesians 3:14-21

Be Still: Father God, I want to draw near to you today. Would you draw near to me.

Read: Ephesians 3:14-21

‘Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.’ (v.20)

Encounter: I remember when I was younger having a theological discussion with my Vicar. I was concerned about the emphasis at that time on having ‘more’ of the Holy Spirit, pursuing ‘more’ all the time. ‘Do we not need to tone it down a bit?’ I asked. 'Isn’t it wise to focus on what we already have in Christ’ rather than keep asking for ‘more’ from God?' He paused... and looked at me over the wisps of steam rising from his cappuccino, and said, ‘There’s always more.'

What he was saying was both theological (we don’t have time here for ‘more’ on that!) but also personal. He was encouraging me to have a posture in prayer, worship and discipleship towards:- 1. Expectation and faith 2. Dependence on God 3. Receptivity to the Holy Spirit’s activity.

This is one of the key things Paul is reminding us about in the passage today. God can do more than you ask, more than you even think! We need to get that kind of mindset inside ourselves. God can do more! This speaks not only of his great power. But also, of his great goodness. Not only can he do far more than you think, but he wants to!

Apply: Expand the horizon of expectations for your life, your calling and purpose. What more could God want to do in and through you. Is there any place you have put a limit on what he wants to do, through a lack of faith, a lack of receptivity, or a lack of dependency? It’s time to adopt the posture of ‘more’.

Devote: Father God, do all you want to do in my life and through my life. Help me always to have faith in your power and in your goodness. I ask you to move in power so that Jesus is more glorified in my life and in our church.
