1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Be Still: Lord, I give you this day and specifically this moment. Help me shift my attention away from the distractions of life and toward you and your presence. (Pause for a moment, close your eyes, and breathe) Come, lead me and guide me today. I invite you into the depths of my heart.

'I have the right to do anything,' you say—but not everything is beneficial. 'I have the right to do anything'—but I will not be mastered by anything
. (v 12)

Encounter: One of the most powerful things Jesus accomplished on the Cross for us was freedom from the old religious law. God gives us free will, agency, and choice—but with such autonomy comes responsibility.

We have three young children, and we’re trying to teach them the joy (and the challenges!) of making their own decisions. Sometimes, they make great choices; other times, they make decisions that later come back to bite them! It is a cliché, but it’s true: our actions have consequences.

For me, the decision is often: do I watch another episode of that TV series, or do I go to bed? I know the beneficial choice, but too often, I choose one more episode and live to regret it the next morning. It’s a small example, but we are presented with decisions in the everyday life of following Jesus.

Often, we know what the ‘beneficial’ choice is, but the honest reality is that, through our flesh, pride, or other influences, we make decisions that feel right in the moment but leave us with regret later.

Jesus invites us to allow his Spirit to lead us in our decision-making. And thankfully, we navigate these challenges with the assurance that God’s grace is still there when we get it wrong.

Apply: Do you have a decision to make soon or a situation that requires a response? Ask God to guide you and lead you in the right direction. Pray for his Spirit to give you conviction and confidence to choose the narrow path, and ask Jesus to walk with you as you take each step.

Devote: Thank you, Jesus, that you bought us freedom and give us guidance to make the right choices. I pray that by the power of your Spirit, you would give me wisdom and direction today.
