2 Corinthians 5
Be Still: Lord thank you for this new day, I pray now that your Holy Spirit would come and fill me as I open your Word today. Amen
Read: 2 Corinthians 5
'For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling.' (v1-2)
Encounter: There’s nothing like sleeping in your own bed after being away for a while, right? I’ve just got back from a holiday with friends - five days of soaking up the sun, lounging by the pool, and eating amazing food. It was a truly wonderful time. But as incredible as holidays are, there’s always this quiet sense that, ‘This isn’t home.’ And while coming back might mean returning to a full inbox and the responsibilities of real life, our hearts still rest at home!
In a deeper way, this mirrors our spiritual journey. As followers of Christ, we can sometimes feel like we’re longing for ‘home’ or that we don’t fully belong. Maybe you've felt that too: trying to walk closely with Jesus while feeling out of step with the culture around you; or maybe you feel deeply troubled by the injustice and brokenness in the world, knowing ‘this just isn’t how things are meant to be’.
Well, let me reassure you, that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s good. We shouldn't feel completely at home here. Paul reminds us of this in today's verses. God never designed this world to be the place where our hearts long to rest.
Our true home is with Jesus in heaven. That’s where we’ll finally feel whole, at peace, satisfied, and fully ourselves. So, when we feel like outsiders or wrestle with the brokenness of the world around us, let it remind us that our souls are yearning for something greater – our eternal home with him.
Apply: Where do you feel out of place or unsettled in this world? Instead of resisting that feeling, let it remind you that your true home is with Jesus. This week, ask yourself: am I becoming too comfortable here, or am I living with eternity in mind? Let that longing draw you closer to God and shape how you live today.
Devote: We pray today, Lord, your kingdom come! May we see a glimpse of our eternal home as we live in the day to day of our earthly life.
