God Is Changing Us Through Our Struggles

2 Corinthians 1:8 (ESV) —

‘…we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.’

John 11:33 (ESV) —

‘(Jesus)… was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.’

2 Tim 4:5 (AMP)  —

‘...be calm and cool and steady, accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship…’

While I have been thinking and researching this question of the troubles we face as Christians, I have found many Bible verses that refer to the benefits, through God’s grace, that flow from our tough experiences. I am not suggesting that you look up all the following references but if this subject is relevant to you or if you are currently struggling with a painful life issue, maybe you would find some of these positive outcomes a comfort, a strength and a call to put your trust more fully in the God who loves you.

•     We can comfort others, as we are comforted. (2 Corinthians 1:4)

•     We receive strength in our weakness. (2 Cor 12:7)

•     We are refined and purified. (1 Peter 1:6-7)

•     We develop endurance and character. (Romans 5:3-5; Hebrews 12:5-10)

•     We become more aware of his presence. (Psalm 46:1)

•     We learn to rely on him and be less independent. (2 Cor 1:8)

•     We are sustained and enabled for his glory. (2 Cor 4:7-10;1 Peter 5:10)

•     We appreciate and look forward to his ultimate provision. (Romans 5:4,5)

•     We become humble. (2 Cor 12:7; James 4:9-10)

•     We are willing to depend on others; develop closer relationships. (Gal 6:2)

•     We grow in our prayer life. (2 Cor 5:1-2)

•     We increase our joy. (James 1:2; 2 Cor 7:4)

•     We receive and more fully appreciate his grace. (1 Cor15:10; Heb 4:15-16)

•     We complete Christ’s sufferings. (Col 1:24; 2 Cor 1:5)

What is God wanting to do for and with you? Will you let him transform your life experiences?

Prayer:  Lord, we cannot always understand why things happen or what good can come out of them, but we are reassured that you are in control and know what you are doing. Like the potter, mould us, as you see fit. In Jesus’ name.
