God Watches Over You
1 Peter 1:3-5a (The Message)
What a God we have! And how fortunate we are to have him, this Father of our Master Jesus! Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven—and the future starts now! God is keeping careful watch over us and the future.
I can just about remember what happened yesterday, I know what’s happening now, but tomorrow…?
How do you feel if you let your mind dwell on the bits of your future that you have no clue about – not the things in the diary, the appointments, the meetings, the birthdays, but all those unknowns over which you have no control. As I write this, I don’t know how ‘church’ is going to be: will we gather again in large numbers, will we be free to go where we want, hug who we want, will we be virus-free? If I think too much about the future, I start to get a bit anxious.
STOP! Read that bit of Scripture again: ‘God is keeping careful watch over us - and the future.’ Not only am I in God’s care now, but he’s also got my future safe as well! In my human form, I can only be in the present. My God, the Holy Spirit, is there in my future. There is nowhere I will be going, no one that I will be meeting, no obstacle I will have to overcome, but he is already there, waiting for me to join him.
I love Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong. Take courage. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you.”
God is striding ahead of you! When someone ‘strides’ it is because they have some purpose ahead. God intentionally goes ahead of you into your future because he is preparing his purposes, his really good purposes, for your life.
So will you trust him with your future or not? If yes, relax! He’s got it covered!
Prayer: Into your hands, Lord, I commit all the days to come.
