Gratitude

Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Thankfulness is very powerful. Studies show that being thankful for the things in our lives, can help our mental health. There are journal-books to be found out there, specifically for people to list the things that they are thankful for. When our lives feel dark and hopeless, recalling things (however small) to be thankful for, can bring light and hope.

Of course, God always knew thankful people, rejoicing in present and past blessing, would receive abundantly more goodness and blessings that would overflow to others. These verses encourage us to bring everything to God in prayer with a thankful heart.

However, it can be difficult to be thankful when your world feels like it is falling apart. During those times in my life, I have thought, what can I possibly be thankful for? Everything I wanted, I planned and hoped for has gone. But amidst that darkness, just recalling one thing to be thankful for is like a shaft of light in a darkened room, and once you recall one thing, you can start recalling others and as the list grows so does the light.

It can be anything, - a cup of tea, a hot shower, your favourite tv show that made you smile, a friend checking in on you, beautiful flowers in your neighbour’s garden…. anything. And it makes a difference, it doesn’t solve anything and everything: that thing you are struggling with will still be there, but the willing choice to be thankful can change our perspective and encourage us to turn in trust to God, who is always there with us in the dark and light.

Prayer - Dear Lord, Thankfulness can be hard, but help us to see the things in our lives to be grateful for. When it's dark, help us to see your light.
