Rule And Reign
Colossians 3:15 (NIV)
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.
Words are my tool of trade: give me a page of complicated narrative to turn into an informative and persuasive piece, and I am happy. I love the poetry and deep yearning of the words of Horatio Stafford that we looked at yesterday. But sometimes, my 'new song' is not about the words but about a spiritual connection that, ironically, I can’t put into words.
So it was with the Gas Street Music song Rule and Reign. I heard it several years ago when we sang it as a church community before its release. I couldn’t stop singing it and feeling such a power even though the words eluded me, and I drove my family completely mad making them up! Anna Hellebronth, who sings the track on the Rewilding Album and co-authored it, has shared the message of the song. She says that we can think of peace being a little ‘wafty’ but when Jesus calmed the storm in Matthew 23:26, we are told “he rebuked the winds and the waves” – that’s not ‘wafty’, ambiguous language. It’s a command with the full authority of the King of Kings behind it.
We can access that same authority; we can call down the peace of Christ to rule in our hearts. I don’t always feel that confident; in fact, I often don’t feel that confident. But when I hear or sing this song, something in my spirit responds. It reminds me of two things: first, to access that authority I have in me as a child of God, and second, to be more open to God speaking to me in this way - and welcome it.
Prayer - Lord, I welcome you today to speak through your Spirit to me and increase my confidence of the authority we have in you.
