Jesus Heals The Blind Man

Tanya Nyakudya is a fourth-year studying Biological Science.

Tanya’s favourite story Luke 18:35-43 (NIV)

‘As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’ He called out, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ ‘Lord, I want to see,’ he replied. Jesus said to him, ‘Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.’ Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.’

Tanya’s reflections — ‘The blind man cries out boldly even though everyone around him is telling him to be quiet. Jesus stops for this man and asks him what he wants. Impressively, Jesus asks the question: ‘What do you want me to do for you?” I feel it’s a question Jesus still asks us today, ‘[Insert your name] what do you want me to do for you?’

Jesus is asking you to remember what he’s already done for you and telling you that he’s ready to do more. This story reminds us never to hesitate to tell Jesus our needs and desires because he cares and is so ready to respond to our faith.’

Tim — There might be people and circumstances in your life that are telling you to be quiet. To silence your prayers and settle for what you have. This story shows us that Jesus wants us to be bold, to be real and talk to him about what’s going on. He might not answer in the way and the time you want but that’s not the point; the point is he’s asking you what you need today. He’s starting a conversation.

Prayer — Begin by quieting your heart so you can hear Jesus asking you, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Then answer his question, boldly, knowing he is powerful and willing and responds to faith.
