Jesus Knows
Romans 8 v 26-27 (ESV)
‘Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the Saints according to the will of God.’
I wonder if you ever have moments when you’re unable to even articulate or communicate to God what you are feeling? Our overthinking and anxieties can act as a wall, stopping us being honest and open to God. Perhaps we even fear what God will think of us if we are truly honest about what is going on in our minds and heart. A.W Tozer has this great quote: ‘What we think about God is the most important thing about us.’* If we are constantly thinking about God as short-tempered and angry, then we will never be brave enough to be honest with him. Alternatively, if we think about God as gracious and kind then we can approach him in full confidence and assurance that nothing will ever taint his love for us; after all, God knows what’s going on in our minds before we even do.
The Holy Spirit has various roles throughout the scriptures, including, simultaneously being teacher, strength-giver and advocate. In this particular verse, the Holy Spirit is acting as Helper. It is the Holy Spirit who intervenes on our behalf when our minds are overthinking, and we are unable to articulate our thoughts. God never leaves us to struggle on our own; he always wants us to be in constant communication with him. Therefore, we should be filled with great confidence that our prayers never have to be grand, well worded or planned out; God knows what is in our minds even before a word leaves our mouth!
Reflection — What are some of the prayers that we have been withholding from God that we need to bring to him this week?
