No More Prima Donnas

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIVUK)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Too many chefs spoil the broth’? It’s an age-old proverb, suggesting that when too many people are involved in a task, it won’t be done well. Specifically, when there are too many leaders, things can get messy. Things get missed and people soon get upset.

Now, consider this: how comfortable are you when you’re not the leader? Especially if you’ve been a seasoned expert in a particular field for years. Holding back your ‘wise’ input isn’t easy - it’s like biting your lip. But here’s the liberating truth: there can only be one prima donna, and it doesn’t have to be you.

Interestingly, God gifted us all with self-control. We often associate it with resisting sinful desires, which is valid. But wanting to lead, to have the final say - that can also be a slippery slope. Look at Jesus: he could have asserted control when he entered this world, but instead, he chose humility. He surrendered his rights and submitted to his heavenly Father.

So, today, consider relinquishing your need to lead. Step back, be content with being led. Sometimes, we’re offended by those in charge - why not lay down that offence? Maybe their way is wiser. Frequently when we put aside our need to be ‘right,’ we gain a broader understanding of the whole. (Incidentally, on an occasion when I've done that, I’ve been saved from making a total fool of myself. 😊)

Self-control isn’t just about controlling a reaction. From a Christian perspective it’s about responding with the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. So, let’s lead from within, guided by something deeper than ego and ambition.

Prayer – Father, today I choose to step back. Please reveal to me what you are doing in and through others and help me to accept what I see.
