The Seemingly Impossible

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV) —
‘For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.’
As a child, I grew up in church reading stories like Jesus' walking on water and can vividly remember how impossible they seemed the first time I heard them. Six-year-old me was quite inquisitive, liked to ask a lot of questions (I’ve not really grown out of that) and was desperate to know how these seemingly impossible feats were achieved.
The same thing happened the first time I read the story of Moses leading the Israelites across the Red Sea. I was completely amazed. How was it done? Who was this God who could perform such incredible miracles? I was so curious that I started to read more stories and ask a lot more questions. I didn’t know it at the time but God knew that, by capturing my curiosity as a child through his Word, he would lead me into relationship with him.
What I love about the Bible, is how God uses the same verses to speak to us in completely different ways throughout our life. In Hebrews, the Word of God is described as ‘living and active’ and when we treat it this way, rather than just skipping past the bits we know, we allow God to bring fresh revelation into our lives. Sometimes it’s a theme or an image but he can also use his words with the accuracy of a sharp sword to speak directly into the situation we are in.
When I read the story of the Red Sea crossing as an adult, God reveals so much more about his character than just how powerful he is. So, this week’s devotionals are going to dig a little deeper into this story in the hope God might reveal something new to you too.
Prayer - Lord, we thank you for the eternal gift of your Word and the ways you speak through it to teach us more about who you are so that we can grow closer in relationship with you.
