John 2:1-12

Be Still: Lord today, open the eyes of my heart. Speak to me through your Word. Guide my steps and lead me in your everlasting ways. Amen

Read: John 2:1-12
'What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.' (v11)

Encounter: Few things in life are more stressful than running a children’s party. Just recently we hosted a party for our four-year daughter. Thirty children attended and it nearly broke me. Just the mention of ‘pass-the-parcel’ now triggers a wave of anxiety in me!

In this story we see Jesus at a party, a wedding. And there is a crisis; they have run out of wine. For the family this constituted a social disaster. The family would have to live with the humiliation and shame of this failure for a long time. It’s in this stressful moment we see Jesus perform his first public miracle.

It’s a miracle that saves a family from shame, but it’s a moment where Jesus reveals something of his nature and glory through a sign. There is so much symbolism in this passage of Scripture. This wedding is a foretaste of the great heavenly celebration to come, where we as God’s people will be united with Christ for all eternity. The water-jars, used for ceremonial washing, are a sign of Jesus doing a new thing within an old system, bringing purification and freedom in a whole new way. The transformation of water into wine signifies the impact Jesus can have, turning the ordinary into something extraordinary. And significantly, this passage starts with the words, “On the third day…” Later John will describe the resurrection of Christ, rising on the third day. This is the story we are now caught up in. This is the God we love and serve. The one who turns water into wine, who turns broken people into whole beings and who turns death into life.

Apply: This miracle hugely encourages me. Firstly, Jesus cares about our everyday needs. He meets us in the mess of our humanity to cover us with his love and care. Where are you feeling overwhelmed? Where are you feeling close to shame and humiliation? Ask Jesus to meet you there. Secondly what a remarkable reminder that Jesus can turn things around. He’s the God of transformation? Where are you needing a miracle? Where do things seem at a dead end. Dare to believe the God who turns water into wine can move in power in your life.

Devote: Lord Jesus, meet me today within all my lack, limitations and struggles. Come and do what only you can do and transform this life for your glory.
