Environment
We value God’s creation and all the people within it.
“Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!”
— Genesis 1:28, 31
At Gas Street Church, we believe the world is God’s precious and good creation. He has entrusted it to us as stewards of His masterpiece. We value all that God has made, recognising the natural world as a reflection of His creativity - one that inspires awe, wonder, worship, and ultimately points us back to Him.
We believe we are called to work towards the flourishing of all creation. As part of this calling, we seek to minimise our negative impact on the environment by thoughtfully considering our energy use, waste, and consumption patterns, both as a church community and as individuals.
To help lead this work, we have an Environmental Consultation Group, made up of committed members of the church and chaired by Matt Blair (Ordinand) and Jerome Belgrave (Facilities and Health & Safety Manager).
What we’ve done so far:
Switching to reusable cups at Central, reducing weekly waste by around 70%
Committing to ethically sourced tea and coffee across all locations and Colmore Coffee
Taking steps to reduce heat loss across all our buildings
Installing secondary glazing at Longbridge
Introducing smart controls to over 50% of our heating systems, enabling zoned heating and reduced energy usage
We recognise that while this is good progress, there is more to do. We are committed to continuing this journey, working towards the Church of England’s Net Zero target by 2030.

What can you do?
This looks different for everyone. Reducing your plastic consumption, altering your food choices, choosing low-emissions travel, engaging with your MP and local groups, and sparking a conversation with peers all help to protect God’s creation.
