Mark 13:14–23

Be Still: Lord, calm my spirit. Help me not to be overcome by fear, but to stay attentive to your voice and faithful to your ways. Amen.

Read: Mark 13:14–23

'If the LORD had not cut short those days, no-one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.' (v20)

Encounter: Jesus speaks of a time of great distress, events that would shake the very foundations of life. His message is urgent: be alert, discern carefully, and do not lose heart. False messiahs and deceptive prophets will rise, performing impressive signs to mislead many. Jesus emphasises: ‘Be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.’

This passage may feel unsettling, but it is fundamentally a message of mercy and preparation. Jesus does not warn to instil despair, but to cultivate endurance, discernment, and trust. Even in chaos, he is Lord, fully in control and nothing surprises him. The faithful response is vigilance, not fear; trust, not panic. His followers are invited to anchor their lives in him rather than in temporary appearances or deceptive promises.

Apply: In your own life, what voices compete for your attention and trust? The world presents false saviours, success, comfort, and human leaders promising hope but unable to deliver. Jesus calls us to discern, prioritise, and cling to him as the ultimate source of truth and stability. Today, take stock of distractions that draw you away from God’s voice. Practise focused prayer, careful reflection, and obedience to his guidance as you navigate life’s challenges.

Devote: Lord Jesus, in times of uncertainty and confusion, help me not to be led astray. Keep me anchored in your truth and confident in your promises. Teach me to discern wisely, to persevere faithfully, and to remain attentive to your guidance, knowing that you are my one true Saviour.
