Mark 13:24–31
Be Still: Lord Jesus, open my eyes to your promises. Help me to wait with hope and to live with faithfulness as I look for your coming. Amen.
Read: Mark 13:24–31
'Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.' (v31)
Encounter: After describing tribulation, Jesus turns to hope. He speaks of cosmic signs: the sun darkened, stars falling, and the glorious return of the Son of Man. Unlike the fleeting splendour of the temple or fragile human systems, his return is certain, unstoppable, and transformative.
Jesus illustrates his point with a fig tree: when its leaves appear, summer is near. In the same way, his words and promises are reliable markers of what is to come. Though earthly circumstances may fluctuate, his Word remains unchanging. This certainty forms the anchor of our faith, reminding us that God’s kingdom is not subject to human timelines, but to divine promise.
Faith calls for patience, hope, and active engagement with God’s Word. It invites us to recognise the impermanence of worldly pursuits and to root ourselves in Christ, whose promises will not fail. In living this way, we can navigate uncertainty with confidence, perseverance, and joy.
Apply: What are you building your life upon? The world shifts quickly. Economies, relationships, and personal health can all change suddenly. Jesus invites you to root your life in him and his Word, letting it shape your decisions, calm fears, and sustain hope. This week, consider practical ways to immerse yourself in Scripture, allowing it to guide your heart, renew your mind, and strengthen your faith.
Devote: Eternal Lord, thank you that your Word never fails. Teach me to cling to your promises when all else feels uncertain. May my life reflect hope in your coming kingdom and trust in your unshakable truth, even amidst life’s storms.
