Luke 22:1-23

Be Still: Lord, quiet the noise within me that I may hear Your voice. Amen

Read: Luke 22:1-23

They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this. (v 23)

Encounter: 225,000 – the estimated number of photos taken each day at the Seven Wonders of the World.

57% – the estimated percentage of those photos that are selfies.

That means in the majority of photos taken at the world’s most awe-inspiring places, the wonder is relegated to the background while people place themselves at the fore. It’s a fascinating insight into our human tendency to make ourselves the focal point – an issue apparently present in Jesus’ time!

Today, we witness one of the most wonder-filled moments in human history: Jesus inaugurates the new covenant – a new way for humanity to relate to God. No longer is access to his presence through human effort or performance, but through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice. His body broken for us. His blood shed for us.

You'd think the disciples would be in awe – wide-eyed and speechless at such an incredible gift of grace. Yet, instead of fixing their eyes on Jesus, their attention turns inward at the news that one of them will betray him. Granted, this is shocking and provokes self-reflection. But just one verse beyond today’s passage, you’ll see that their self-examination is not a repentant searching of their hearts. Instead, it evolves into an argument about which one is the greatest.

Imagine that – at the Last Supper, in the presence of Jesus, debating their own significance. If you’re like me, it doesn’t take much imagination. I often find myself distracted in prayer, reading his Word, or worship, consumed by thoughts of myself.

The access we have to God’s presence cost Jesus his life, and at the start of Holy Week, let's endeavour to behold him for who he is.

Apply: Imagine yourself as a guest at the Last Supper. Consider the bread, symbolising his body, broken for you and your healing. Ponder the cup, symbolising his blood, shed for you and the forgiveness of your sins. Linger a little longer...and fight the urge to make it a fleeting thought. Behold the wonder of all Jesus did.

Devote: Holy Spirit, help me fix my eyes and mind on you.
