Day 24 — But I Trusted
Psalm 13:5-6
But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Beautifully, David nearly always finds a path for his soul to climb back into the arms of trust in his Father - even at the end of some of the most pain-filled psalms. Lament is a rich spiritual discipline that we don’t fully understand. However we do learn from David the upside-down ability of lament to raise our faith and trust in God when we reach the other side.
I once did a bungee-jump to raise money for charity. Right up until the moment I was about to jump I had never given a second thought to the idea that a bungee-cord might snap. Then in that moment I was terrified about all that could possibly go wrong - I nearly backed out due to fear! I survived the jump, with a renewed faith in bungee-cords – and even a slight desire to do a bigger jump next time!
All through scripture, and in many of our lives, we see God prove himself time and time again to be God Almighty. The One for whom all things are possible, the One who will stop at nothing to show his unfailing love and faithfulness to his children, the One who delights when we trust in him. Each time we see God move in power, it raises our faith - he’s done it before, so he’ll do it again. Now, perhaps more than ever, it is imperative we take refuge in the peace that our God is sovereign over all things.
‘The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults, and my song I give thanks to him.’ Psalm 28:7
Prayer: Take some time to meditate on the verses from Psalm 13 and 28. Ask God to reveal more of his majesty, rule, reign and power to you today. If there is an area of lament that feels insurmountable, ask God to speak to you about the truth of his freedom over that situation.
