Don’t Blow Up Your House

Psalm 97 –

The Lord Reigns, let the earth be glad; let the distant shores rejoice. Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

“Man blows up part of house in France while trying to swat fly”.

This was the headline the other week and it drew my attention (obviously!). What? How? Why? Was he ok? Did he get the fly?! (He was ok and no-one has seen the fly since).

When we’re faced with a challenge that comes into our lives, it can bug our minds all day long like a fly in a house. It can dominate our emotions, our mindset and outlook for that day. I know I can get really worried about how someone will react or what will happen next.

The temptation is to throw everything at it. Like the man in the story, everything we have at our disposal is unleashed at the issue. It’s hard work, it’s tiring and it also can end up sometimes damaging us even more. We can ‘blow up’ the house of our lives easily if we don’t bring God into the situation.

One of the central themes of the Psalms (the songs of the Temple) is that ‘The Lord Reigns’.

The Christian way is to live under that reality each day. Try saying it out loud right now where you are if you can: “The Lord Reigns!”. Or get on your own and say it. Say it again, a couple of times. As you declare the truth, as you give everything over to God, his power fills you afresh. He is in control. His hands hold your life. His is the highest authority.

As you say it, two things happen: 1. You entrust him with the challenge you face today. 2. The negative power over you that the situation threatens, is deflated. The ‘sting’ is taken out. Nothing has power over you other than the Lord Your God. You are his.

Reflect – Don’t blow up your house whilst swatting a fly. Is there a situation right now where you can call on the name of the Lord and declare that He Rules and He Reigns over it all? It may not resolve the situation straight away but it will dethrone its power over your life and place it under the feet of Jesus. Entrust your days to him.

Pray – Thank you, Lord, that You REIGN! Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the Power, and Yours is the Glory, Forever and Ever, Amen.
