Everlasting Father
Psalms 90:1-2 (NIV) —
‘Lord, you have been our dwelling-place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.’
I find the concept of 'forever' a challenging one: dwelling on it freaks me out as it feels like such a huge commitment and is so so so long! The idea of staying in the same job, living in the same house or eating the same breakfast forever would bring some people pure joy and others complete terror.
Whichever way you respond to the concept, in the world we live in, 'forever' does not exist. Everything has a beginning and an end, things evolve, people change, live and die and no earthly thing lasts forever so the idea of 'everlasting' is unfathomable.
Despite this, I can struggle to let things go and I find it hard when friends move away or when something I have had for a long time breaks or goes missing. I get used to it being there so when it's not there anymore it can really throw me. Things changing can be quite overwhelming.
But grasp this - God is everlasting and he does not fade, he does not change or move on. He is someone you can depend on and is faithful even when you are not. During Christmas we celebrate Jesus coming into the world as a baby, but he was here before the earth was formed and will remain forever. He is here to stay and be intimately and lovingly involved in our lives.
So when you and I feel like everything around us is changing and overwhelming us, let's grasp a tight hold on the steadfast faithfulness of our Everlasting Father.
Prayer - Lord, thank you for always being there for us and when things change, you remain steadfast and faithful in our lives.
