For Unto Us A Child Is Born

Isaiah 9:6-7 (NIV) —

‘For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.’

A child is such a precious gift. My nephew was born in April this year, and as the first grandchild in the family, we got to experience this gift for the very first time. The moment the pregnancy was announced we waited together excitedly, counting down the weeks, preparing for the new arrival. Nursery painted, cot built, what felt like hundreds of Babygro's bought and a stockpile of nappies acquired. Until there was nothing left to do but wait.

Then the day came, and everything changed. He was here, and with him he brought unspeakable joy, love and a togetherness that cannot be replicated. He is a gift, and a gift that keeps giving with every smile, every laugh, every new skill learnt.

A child is a precious gift.

But as we delve into the Christmas story, it becomes apparent that this birth is far more important, far more precious than we could imagine. ‘What child is this?’ Born to a virgin, visited by shepherds and wise men alike, angels and stars heralding the way.

As the famous hymn answers: ‘This, this is Christ the King’. The one who was promised. God’s own son, given to us. He will have many names: Immanuel, Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He shall usher in a new kingdom where the captives find freedom, those who mourn find joy, good news is given to the poor and light is shone into the darkest of places.

'For unto us a child is born', the Saviour of the world; the most precious gift ever given. What should our response be? Over this week we’re going to explore this story together, receiving afresh this gift and discovering how we can respond this Christmas.

Prayer - Lord, remind me again of the precious gift of Jesus. May I receive him afresh today.
