God Is More Than Enough

(This week our devotionals are provided by students of Gas Street Academy)

Daniel 3:24-27 (NIV)

Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, ‘Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?’ They replied, ‘Certainly, Your Majesty.’ He said, ‘Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.’

Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, ‘Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!’

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

God is more than enough for us, always. He never does anything less than perfectly. He is far beyond our human understanding of what is possible and can often shock us with just how ‘enough’ he is. I am most struck by this truth in the book of Daniel, which is one of my favourite in the Bible. In Daniel chapter three we find the story of the Boys in the Furnace: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are thrown into the furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar because they wouldn’t bow down and worship his image of gold. We know the story, but what I want to focus on is the detail and the extent to which God rescued them. In chapter three, verse 27: ‘They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them’.

WOW!

This is such an incredible insight into the God we serve and such a beautiful demonstration of how good he is! I know that if I was one of those boys and I was praying for the miracle, I’d be saying ‘God, I just don’t wanna die! Maybe burn my clothes or make me covered in soot - I'm even willing to be burned a little, but if you can just keep me from dying then I'm happy.’ Which is pretty fair for the situation, but God is so much MORE than that. They didn’t even smell of smoke! God never does anything less than perfectly. And this story is both an encouragement and a challenge for me, to trust God’s faithfulness and to pray with boldness and courage for his perfection to reign.

Reflect — Spend a few moments today remembering the times when God has been more than enough for you in provision and fulfilled promises. If you find yourself longing to see a breakthrough in your life, pray for it, standing on the truth that God is more than enough.
