Hakuna Matata

Matthew 6:25-27 (NIV)

‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?’

‘Hakuna Matata! What a wonderful phrase

Hakuna Matata! Ain't no passing craze

It means no worries. For the rest of your days

It's our problem-free philosophy

Hakuna Matata!’

I am sure most of you are picturing the scene of Simba, Timon and Pumba walking across the log over the waterfall and humming the tune; some of you may even be singing along! I apologise for getting the song stuck in your heads so early in the morning.

If there was a year where God could have given us a free pass to worry it would’ve been 2020/2021, I do not know anyone who didn’t worry about finances, family, health and the future at some point over the last 12 months. It has been and continues to be one very unknown season. The good thing is God knows, and he gave us these verses in Matthew where Jesus commands us not to worry about the things of life because he will take care of them. This is easier said than done but we have a God who cares for us and loves us.

Unlike the Hakuna Matata, as Christians we are not guaranteed a problem free life. However, when we are faced with problems, burdens or worries we can cast them onto Jesus (Psalm 55:2). The Bible is filled with promises that God will carry us through our worries. Here are just a few: Isaiah 41:13, Matthew 11:28-29, Philippians 4: 6-7, 1 Peter 5:7. I would encourage you to write these verses down somewhere or memorise them so that when worries start to appear, you can recall and fill your mind with these amazing truths.

Prayer – Father, thank you that you are a God who cares and who doesn’t ignore the worries that we face. Help us Lord to give our worries daily to you.
