Knowing The Truth
Sarah is studying Theology at St Mellitus College.
James 1:17-18 (NLT)
Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.
When you meet people for the first time, what do they want to know about you? Usually, it’s a string of questions: what’s your name, where are you from, what’s your job… Ultimately, what they’re really asking is: who are you? James gives us the answer in just three simple words: ‘His prized possession’.
Try that as your answer next time you meet someone new…it would definitely spark a more interesting conversation than talking about your hometown!
Whether you choose to announce that next time you meet someone new or not, the truth still stands: God calls you ‘his prized possession’... What a title! You not only belong to God, as his son or daughter, but you’re valuable to him, he loves, delights and cares for your every need. And what’s even better is ‘he never changes’, he never grows tired, or weary, or changes his mind, but he’s constant, and he’s faithful.
What would it look like if you were to show up this week, fully aware of your identity, belonging, and what God says about you? And what would it look like to lean into the truth that ‘he never changes’? Where in your daily life would freedom be released; where in your inner being would freedom be released?
Let these questions guide you into conversation and closeness with God, as you reflect on his love and his faithfulness to you.
This week, we’ll be looking at the book of James, and homing in on the wisdom and truth he gives us, looking at how we can apply this to our own daily walk with Christ.
Prayer - Jesus, remind me of my identity in you, help me to stay rooted in that. Remind me of the times that you’ve been faithful, and you’ve shown up; let that guide me.
