Safety In The Name

Proverbs 18:10 (NIV) —

‘The name of the Lord is a strong tower,

the righteous run to it and they are safe.’

Have you ever just wanted to run away rather than stay and fight? Have you ever experienced the fight or flight response? The definition of this response is:

‘The fight or flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event that is perceived as stressful or frightening. The perception of threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body to fight or flee.’ (Extract from an article by Psychology Tools)

Have you a memory of a place where you always felt safe and secure? Have you a place you go to find peace, calm and security?

We have all, in various ways and to various degrees, experienced the storms that life throws our way and have had to choose, in our vulnerability, our response.  As God’s people we are not immune to these feelings of wanting to run, but we have the advantage of knowing where to run. As children of faith, we know the best way is to run with open arms to our heavenly Father but sometimes that can seem the hardest thing to do. We try to work it out and find the solution ourselves.

Today, let’s lift before God all those we know who are in a stormy place fighting the wind of adversity and being lashed by the rain of despair. If we are the ones who are there in the storm, let’s lift our eyes to the One who stilled the storm and run to his presence – the safest place we can be.

Prayer - Lord, quicken our hearts to stop and pray for those you bring to our minds today, that they will run to your presence and find safety in your name.
