Seasons
2 Peter 3:9 —
‘The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.’
In our world, waiting is not something we do well. Almost everything around us is instant, and the few things that we may have to wait for, we tend to distract ourselves from - phones out, headphones on - constantly busy and pre-occupied. We don’t like to wait for anything, and so we don’t like to wait on God.
The problem is that in God, there is purpose in our waiting. There are lessons to be learnt, joy to be had and deeper intimacy with God available but if we never allow ourselves wait on God, we miss out, we rush through and we end up trying to rule our own lives.
This verse tells us that whilst we wait on God - he is working! Your waiting is not empty but instead the precise and careful work of the father, refining us in accordance with his love!
Waiting really means to make a sustained effort to trust God and to patiently believe in his guidance even when can’t see a way ahead. It means being slow to speak and slow to Anger (Proverbs 16). Waiting forces us not to be consumed by how we’re feeling, and instead become receptive to what God’s doing. To hold firm to his promises over us and trust he is working in the waiting.
Today let’s remember that no time is lost waiting on the Lord. That our patience in the waiting is a practice that bears fruit, bringing us in tune with God’s rule and allowing him to reign in our lives.
Prayer: God, Thank you that though seasons change, your promise to me remains true. That not a moment is wasted. Teach me to wait patiently on your word, receptive to your voice and to your will. Amen.
