Mark 11:27-33
Be Still: Lord, help me to be still before you. Help me to listen. Help me to receive. I ask you to transform my heart and my mind as I choose to spend this time with you today. Amen.
Read: Mark 11:27-33
'By what authority are you doing these things?’ they asked. ‘And who gave you authority to do this?’ (v28)
Encounter: As Jesus returned to Jerusalem, the chief priests, teachers of the law, and elders confronted him. They questioned his authority: the authority behind his teaching, his miracles, and especially his cleansing of the temple the day before.
Their challenge was not out of genuine curiosity, but rather resistance. If they acknowledged his authority came from God, they would have to submit to him. Instead, they tried to trap him in debate, but Jesus turned the question back on them, exposing their unwillingness to believe.
This passage reminds us that the authority of Jesus is not just a theological concept; it demands a personal response. If Jesus truly has all authority, then my life is not my own. His words carry weight, his commands require obedience, and his presence calls for surrender.
Like those religious leaders, we can sometimes resist his authority, especially when it disrupts our comfort, pride, or control. But true discipleship begins with acknowledging that Jesus is Lord in every area of our lives. His authority is not oppressive; it is freeing. He uses it to lead us into truth, wholeness, and life.
Apply: Reflect today: is there an area of your life where you’ve resisted Jesus’ authority? Maybe in your decisions, relationships, or habits? Invite him to be Lord over that area. Pray for the courage to not just admire his teaching, but to submit with trust to his authority.
Devote: Lord Jesus, you are the one with all authority in heaven and on earth. Forgive me for the times I resist or question your rule in my life. Teach me to trust your authority, knowing it is rooted in love and wisdom. Help me to surrender every part of my life to you, that I may walk fully as your disciple.
