Mark 11:12-26

Be Still:
Lord, help me to be still before you. Help me to listen. Help me to receive. I ask you to transform my heart and my mind as I choose to spend this time with you today. Amen.

Read: Mark 11:12-26

Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. (v23)

Encounter:
The disciples were amazed when they saw the fig tree had withered the next day. In response, he teaches them about the power of faith. He uses an extreme image, moving a mountain into the sea, to show that faith in God can accomplish what seems impossible.

This verse isn’t about us commanding God to do whatever we wish. It’s about aligning our hearts with him in faith and trust. Jesus emphasises not doubting but believing. Real faith is not confidence in ourselves or in the strength of our prayers, but confidence in God – in his character, his promises, and his power.

Mountains in Scripture often symbolise immovable obstacles. For the disciples, those ‘mountains’ included persecution, opposition, fear, and human limitations. For us, the mountains may be struggles with sin, broken relationships, financial burdens, health concerns, or deep discouragement. Jesus is reminding us that no mountain is bigger than God. Faith doesn’t make us powerful; faith connects us to the One who is all-powerful.

Apply:
What mountain are you facing right now? Instead of staring at its size, lift your eyes to God. Speak to the mountain in prayer, not with wishful thinking, but with faith that God is able. Write down one specific situation where you will choose to pray boldly and trust God’s power.

Devote:
Lord, thank you that no mountain is too big for you. Strengthen my faith to believe your promises and trust your power. Teach me not to be overcome by doubt, but to stand firm in the confidence that you are able to do immeasurably more than I ask or imagine. I place my mountain in your hands today.
