Matthew 15:29-39

Be Still: Father help me as I read your Word. By your Spirit, I want to become more like Jesus today. Amen.

Read: Matthew 15:29-39

His disciples answered, 'Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?' (v33)

Encounter: This story has a vibe of 'deja vu' about it and if you were reading with us on Tuesday, you’ll know that only a chapter before this, Jesus has fed over five thousand people with just a little boy’s lunchbox. Yet here we are again: there’s a massive crowd who have been with Jesus for days in a remote place, amazed by his teaching and healing.

Jesus turns to his disciples and says, ‘Now you feed them’. With over four thousand hungry people and not a McDonalds anywhere in sight, this story sounds familiar. But the disciples seem to have already forgotten. So, Jesus, in his kindness, does almost a repeat miracle of the feeding of the five thousand, teaching his disciples an important lesson – he is still enough.

Apply: I need regularly reminding that Jesus is enough for me. I can surprise myself with how forgetful I seem to be of his faithfulness, his love, his goodness, his provision, his grace and so on!

Because I know I forget and get caught up in the worries of life, it becomes so important to worship Jesus, to receive Holy Communion, to meet with other Christians, to read Scripture and to pray. To bring myself before the Bread of Life each and every day. To' forget not all his benefits'. (Ps 103:2)

If you feel like you’ve slightly forgotten today, firstly join the club (at least me and the disciples!), and then let the Holy Spirit remind you that he is enough.

Devote: Lord thank you that we have all that we need in you. Remind me today of what you have done and what you can do.
