Titus 3
Be Still: Lord today, open the eyes of my heart. Speak to me through your Word. Guide my steps and lead me in your everlasting ways. Amen
Read: Titus 3
Remind the people …to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone. (v1-2)
Encounter: Leadership and gentleness are two words that rarely seem to be held together. Many of our global leaders, politicians and influencers seek to exert their authority by pushing for more power, land, resources. And there are so many public speeches and words that tear others down, criticise and crudely mock.
The way of Jesus is at complete odds with this model of leadership all around us. If you want to make a change, to build something extraordinary, being gentle towards everyone, for many, will be low down the strategy plan. But in Jesus we see the one person who transformed the entire cosmos and when he describes himself, he says, 'I am gentle and humble in heart.' (Matt 11:29)
In a world of ego, selfishness and high anxiety, leaders who exercise gentleness are like a healing balm, bringing peace and wholeness to those around them. Gentleness calms situations down. Gentleness ushers in the presence of Jesus.
Apply: Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit. It slowly, beautifully, and faithfully brings about transformation. At times it might get overlooked as people are attracted by gifting and strength. But I believe it’s a gentle and kind church that will see the deepest impact in our society. It may take years and decades to grow, but gentleness is a rare and precious thing that builds everyone up. It is the gentle who can most be trusted to hold real power. A good definition of gentleness is strength under control.
How can I grow in gentleness? How can I show gentleness both to myself and to those around me?
Devote: Lord thank you for the way you are gentle towards me. You are the One who is meek and mild and yet you hold all power and might in your hands. Help me to be gentle in the way I live, lead, and love.
