Luke 7:1–10
Be Still: Jesus, you see everything, everywhere. As I read today, help me trust you more, to believe in who you are and what you can do, even when I cannot see it. Amen.
Read: Luke 7:1–10
But say the word, and my servant will be healed. (v7)
Encounter: From Sundays to Mondays – When You Cannot Fix It
This story begins with a crisis. A Roman army officer’s servant, someone he deeply values, is close to death. The officer is powerful and respected, yet none of that can help. So, he turns to Jesus.
What stands out is how he approaches Jesus. Others insist he deserves help because he is generous and supportive of the community. But when Jesus comes near, the officer sends a message saying, 'I do not deserve to have you come under my roof.' He knows he cannot demand anything. Yet he is completely confident in Jesus’ authority: 'Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.' He understands that real power does not need to be loud or physically present. One word from Jesus is enough.
I remember praying with a couple at a festival who had just stepped down from leading their church. She was holding it together, but he was clearly struggling. My wife and I met with them, and I felt totally out of my depth. I was still processing my own story, with no clever answers to offer. All I could pray was, 'Jesus, I don’t have solutions, but I feel the pain. Please step in and do what only you can do.' Somehow that moment became a turning point. God met him, hope rose, and something shifted.
This is where faith becomes real. It is not just what we say we believe, but how we trust Jesus with people and situations we cannot fix. The officer shows us that humility and boldness belong together. We come to Jesus not because we deserve anything, but because we know who he is.
Apply: Who is the 'servant' on your heart today, someone you care about but cannot rescue? Bring their name to Jesus. Admit your limits, then simply ask him to 'say the word' over their life. You might even write a one-line prayer: Jesus, I can’t change this, but I trust you to act here.
Devote: Lord Jesus, speak your word into their lives and help me trust you.
