Philippians 1:12-30
Be still: Lord help me cut out the distractions of the world to encounter to you in your Word. Amen

To live is Christ, to die is gain (v 21)
Encounter: 'I'm going back to Birmingham tomorrow, Gramps.'
'Oh, that’s nice. I’m going to Heaven.'
This was the final interaction I had with my grandfather, 24 hours before he passed away. He was my hero. I grew up listening to him tell stories of his life laid down in service of God. I learned so much from him, but in our last exchange he taught me one final lesson, echoed from Paul’s words: 'To live is Christ, to die is gain.'
I love Birmingham, but prayer-walking its canals cannot compare to walking hand in hand with Jesus where the streets are paved in gold!
Imprisoned and facing execution, Paul considers two paths: to live or to die. To die would be gain: to see Jesus’ face to face, bask in his glory, hear 'Well done, good and faithful servant.' and be free from pain and struggle. Yet to live would be Christ. Paul still had work to do. There were people to love, encourage and teach, and more fruitful labour to accomplish.
Twenty-four hours after our final conversation, my grandfather had gone to be with the Lord. To die is gain. But he didn’t waste his final hours. That very night, he led his carers to the Lord at his bedside. To live is Christ.
If you are still breathing, there is a reason. Paul reminds us that we are here for the sake of others: to build them up, share the good news of Jesus, partner with God in populating heaven, and bring his kingdom here on earth. And we do not do it alone. We have 'God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ' (v19) within us, guiding and empowering us.

Devote: Holy Spirit may I be attentive to your lead, and bold to follow, in your power and for your glory.
