Matthew 5:38–48

Be Still: Lord, open my heart to receive your Word today. Teach me what it looks like to live generously and to go beyond what is expected. Help me reflect your love through my actions. Amen

Read: Matthew 5:38–48

If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. (v41-42)

Encounter: Jesus asks us to be generous beyond what is asked of us, not to live a life counting the score. I have friends like this, and I am so grateful for them. One way I’ve experienced this kind of generosity is through.... cars. Rogue, I know but bear with me.

No, sadly, someone has not gifted me a brand-new Lamborghini (though if you would like to, feel free to reach out!) I don’t have a car, but my friends and community have stepped in whenever I’ve needed one. Sometimes it meant giving me a lift when it completely inconveniences them, driving in the opposite direction to where they need to be, or letting me use their cars under their insurance. And not just for emergencies – but for ordinary, everyday life things.

Experiencing generosity from others first-hand has done two things for me. First, it has shown me the joy of being part of Church and community. Second, it has brought Jesus’ words in these verses to life! Generosity is more than fulfilling an obligation; it’s going beyond what’s asked or expected, and doing it willingly, cheerfully, and with love.

We can be so protective of our time, our resources, and our possessions, forgetting that none of these things follow us into eternity. Going above and beyond in the way we give of ourselves to others is one way we reflect God’s heart for his children – he gave everything for us, not because he had to but because he wanted to. God is inviting us to participate in his kingdom on earth by emulating this same generosity, giving and sacrifice.

Apply: Where in your life can you not just meet a need, but go above and beyond with generosity this week? Is there a way to stretch your time, resources, or abilities to bless someone unexpectedly?

Devote: Lord, remind me that generosity is not about obligation, but about reflecting your heart. Help me to give more than is asked, to love more than is expected, and to be a living example of your grace to those around me.
