Matthew 6:19–34

Be Still: Lord, I pray today that you would encounter me today through your living Word. Amen

Read: Matthew 6:19–34

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? (v25)

Encounter: Have you ever had someone tell you to ‘chill out’ and it immediately has the opposite effect? Any ounce of calm you had instantly vanishes. Sometimes reading Jesus’ words, ‘Do not worry,’ gives me the same vibe. It can feel too simple, as if God is this laid-back, hippy-esque figure saying, ’Don’t worry – be happy.’

God isn’t careless or naïve about the challenges we face. He speaks these words because he knows the truth we often forget: we are held in the hands of a Father who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and deeply attentive to our lives. Our needs don’t escape his notice, and he takes delight in providing for us.

Jesus calls us to redirect our attention from the things we try to control to the One who is in control of everything. Life is more than food, more than clothing, and more than the day-to-day pressures that weigh on us. Worry doesn’t protect us; it clouds our perspective and drains the energy God has given us to live fully in the present. When we place our trust in him, we can let go of the constant calculations and fears, knowing that he will provide what we truly need at the right time.

Apply: Where does worry take root in your life? What would it look like to consciously hand that over to God today – to step forward in trust, even when the outcome is unclear?

Devote: Lord, help me to place my trust in you, not in my own efforts or understanding. Remind me that I am under your care, that you know my needs, and that you are faithful. Teach me to bring my anxieties to you honestly and to lean into your presence rather than my fear.
