Luke 14:1-11
Be still: Lord, thank you for today and your Word. As I read, please help me to understand what you want me to know. Amen
Read: Luke 14:1-11
For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (v3)
Encounter: At a formal meal, it should be the host who designates the place for each guest. Jesus was in the house of a Pharisee leader, and saw people were moving around towards the seats of honour, to get attention and respect.
This kind of behaviour is, sadly, fairly normal for humans. All of us trying to seek the best for ourselves; never mind if it means that someone next to us will lose out. But in the parable Jesus tells, we are intended to see God as the host. It reminds us that he is the creator of all, with authority over everything. He has the final say and will exalt and humble people by his just will. He knows our hearts, our attitudes, our motives and integrity.
People of pride at the Pharisee's table probably assumed their achievements or polished grandeur should earn them a place of honour. A similar attitude prevails in today's world. But a person of humility realises that their gifts, talents and attributes are from God. He or she depends completely on God to live according to his will, knowing he is the giver of all good gifts. Such people are honoured by God.
Apply: When we approach God in prayer or worship, there's no point trying to hide anything bad, because he sees us completely yet still loves us: no more or no less for what we have or haven’t done. Have I been assuming a place of honour for being an extra-good Christian, or am I humble and secure, knowing from whom my strength and talents have come? It helps to realise our identity as a child of God, a welcome guest at his table.
Devote: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you so much for loving me and choosing me to be your child. Thank you for the amazing gifts you have given me. I’m sorry when I’ve not acknowledged that you are the one who enables me. Show me any areas in my life that need changing in order to live better for you.
