Hebrews 12:14-29

Be Still: Lord God thank you that you are almighty and powerful, that, while the world may be shaken, you will never be. Amen

Read: Hebrews 12:14-29

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our ‘God is a consuming fire.' (v28-29)

Encounter: Are you a carrot or a stick type of person? (I do wonder whether chocolate could be offered as a third option?) Whether you prefer the motivation of challenge or promise, you will know that one thing that cannot be attained through the motivation of intimidation or fear is.......love.

Today’s passage contrasts two options: two mountains, one of darkness, gloom and fear (Mount Sinai, representing God’s law and judgment); and one of life, joy, angelic celebration and the presence of Jesus (Mount Zion).

The first mountain proved incapable of changing hearts and minds towards the Lord: the old covenant of rules and laws produced only fear and trembling but not a heart-change. And so a new covenant is offered and Jesus enters the picture with a new promise for us. It’s a promise of joy instead of despair, forgiveness instead of fear, invitation instead of exclusion. And this promise of love and grace motivates our hearts to turn towards him.

Apply: In a world that seems perpetually upside down, confusing, changeable and uncertain, what a relief it is to know that this kingdom of God, this mountain, ‘cannot be shaken’.

What would it mean to you to accept the invitation that is offered – and free – to come to the ‘city of the Living God’ (v22), to experience the place of joy, love, forgiveness, and grace, despite the circumstances around you? We don’t need to be stuck at Mount Sinai, afraid of the judgment of God, instead we can build our lives on Mount Zion, not through our own capability or worth, but through the victory of Jesus.

Devote: The only right response to this incredible gift is gratitude and worship. If you are able, sing out loud a simple phrase of worship and thankfulness to God right now. Allow the Holy Spirit to stir up a worshipping heart in you and experience the power of the new covenant promise today.
