Luke 10:1–16

Be Still:

Read: Luke 10:1–16

When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' (v.5)

Encounter: So much of Luke’s gospel so far has centred on Jesus and his twelve disciples. There are plenty of hints that he had other followers, including Mary Magdalene and ‘many others’ (Luke 8:3) but even so it almost comes as a surprise that he has so many close and trusted followers ready and willing to be commissioned, to become Christian missionaries! Off they go, two by two, tasked with healing the sick and proclaiming the Kingdom of God – the role of evangelists ever since. It is striking, though, that at every house they visit the first words they are to speak are these: ‘Peace to this house.’

That is their commission in a nutshell – to be bringers of peace. Peace with God as repentance, and trust in the reconciling death of Jesus, lead to sins forgiven; and then, gloriously, the ‘peace of God, which surpasses all understanding’ (Philippians 4:7)

Their commission, and our commission too. And we will be all the more effective as peace-bringers if our own hearts are at peace. What if a heart at peace is one that loves its neighbour as itself? Loves its enemies? Is merciful and not judging? Forgives not seven times but seventy times seven? Feeds the hungry and gives drink to the thirsty?

In other words, a heart at peace is a heart that follows the heart of Jesus. Jesus who said: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’ (John 14:27)

Apply: A challenge for today. Wherever you go, seek to bring peace. As you go in, try to remember to say, quietly or out loud, ‘Peace to this house/ office/ classroom/ shop/ laboratory/ surgery.’

Devote: Lord Jesus, you are called the Prince of Peace. Help me today to be a bringer of peace wherever I go and to whomever I meet.
