Filling Up On Junk

Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those that hunger and thirst for righteousness

I love a Big Mac. I consider it one of man’s greatest achievements. For me, Ronald McDonald is up there with Leonardo DaVinci and William Shakespeare as one of the best creative minds this world has ever produced. Sure, the Mona Lisa is a nice painting but if I had to live in a world without one of them, I’d keep the Big Mac.

The problem with a Big Mac is that it’s basically junk, it gives you the dopamine hit, but it has very little nutritional value. Eat too much junk and it can have a detrimental impact on your physical and mental health. And as my Mum always said to me: ‘if you fill up on junk, you won’t be hungry for your dinner’.

Jesus says ‘blessed are those that hunger and thirst for righteousness’

Are you hungry for God? Or have you filled up on junk? Sin, like a Big Mac, might give us a dopamine hit, but it destroys our spiritual health and kills our hunger for God. We need to be mindful of what we’re consuming, what content we’re clicking on, what shows we’re watching, what voices we’re listening to. Are they killing our desire for God or feeding it? If we want the Holy Spirit to fill us, we need to stop eating junk food and make room.

So, this morning, before you ask the Spirit to fill you, ask him to empty you. Tip your heart upside down and let pride, selfish ambition and the lies of this world fall away. Make room for Jesus.

Prayer — Holy Spirit, I empty myself of everything that is contrary to you, please fill me today.
