The Heart’s Song

Philippians 3:7-9

'Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him.'

What is the song of my heart, the tune expressing my heart's greatest desire? Another question: to whom and to what is the melody of my affection pouring out? We are by nature worshipping creatures. There is an innate desire for us to pour out our love, to adore and to lift up something or someone that we consider to be valuable above all else. That can take the form of many things.

We decide what or whom we worship. Unfortunately, we have created altars to idols that were never meant to be worshipped. There is only one who is worthy of the melody flowing from the depth of your heart and his name is Jesus Christ.

Nothing and nobody else is deserving of my worship, of my devotion and heart, my song. Revelation of who God is, brings illumination and renewal and a new context for living. Paul can write like this because he has encountered Jesus: that encounter changed him forever, changed his heart, changed the way he did things and what he valued above all else.

My prayer for us all is for deeper encounter and closer relationship with this man Jesus, that he may change us by his presence, that he would tune us ever so delicately and precisely by his Spirit so that the songs of our hearts would please him.

Prayer — Psalm 27:4 'The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.'
