The Waiting Room

Chereece is a Solicitor currently on maternity leave

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (AMP) —

‘He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. He has also planted eternity (a sense of divine purpose) in the human heart [a mysterious longing which nothing under the sun can satisfy, except God]—yet man cannot find out (comprehend, grasp) what God has done (His overall plan) from the beginning to the end.’

My journey to become a Solicitor wasn't an easy one. It felt like the longest waiting room where my name or number would never be called. It was full of many lows - rejection after rejection, doubts and frustrations. I was getting older, and more aspiring solicitors were joining the pool of candidates year after year hoping for that elusive training contract.

With that said, it is important to keep watering God-given promises, even when you can't see a shoot sprouting up. This can be done through prayer (sometimes my tears were the prayer), reading the Word and speaking to God, recalling and reclaiming his promises to you.

There is also a practical element because 'faith without works of obedience is dead' - James 2v26. In my case I worked and volunteered in different environments that had some sort of legal angle, sometimes nothing at all, but I could work on other transferable skills, whilst networking and applying for many training contracts. All in the hope of qualifying one day.

In 2014, the wait was over, my patience rewarded, I received a yes, and commenced training in 2015. At the formal ceremony at the Law Society in 2017 where I was announced as a solicitor, there was an evident God moment where the man who presided over the ceremony quietly quoted to me over canapés the same scripture that I had held onto all those years through the rejection (his wife was a Baptist Minister). This was it:

'Open your mouth for the mute, For the rights of all who are unfortunate and defenceless; open your mouth, judge righteously, and administer justice for the afflicted and needy.' (Proverbs 31:8-9 AMP)

Prayer - Holy Spirit please help me to wait patiently, by watering my God given promises by faith and action, with the assurance it will be made beautiful in its time.
