Luke 11:29–36
Be Still: Lord, still my heart in your presence today. Open my eyes to see you afresh and my ears to hear you speaking through your word. Amen
Read: Luke 11:29–36
Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. (v34)
Encounter: When Jesus says: ‘Your eye is the lamp of your body’, He isn’t simply talking about physical eyesight here, but spiritual focus. What we fix our eyes on eventually shapes us. It forms our hearts, influences our thinking, and changes how we perceive Jesus and the gospel itself.
An event witnessed by two different people can be interpreted in completely different ways depending on what they are looking for. One person sees beauty, another sees inconvenience. One sees hope, another sees failure. Often, perception reveals more about the condition of the heart than the situation itself.
That is exactly what was happening in this passage. People stood face to face with Jesus - the Son of God performing miracles, teaching truth, revealing the kingdom - and yet still demanded more signs. Their issue was not lack of light, but distorted vision. Their hearts were focused elsewhere. They were trying to interpret spiritual truth through personal expectations.
What are we allowing before our eyes each day that is quietly shaping our hearts and spiritual vision? What are we absorbing without even realising it? Over time, the things we continually look toward begin to shape the direction of our lives and the direction of our faith.
But Jesus invites us into something better: a life with a ‘single eye’- a heart undivided, attentive to him, allowing his light to shape every part of who we are.
Apply: Take a moment today to honestly reflect on what has been capturing your attention lately. What has been shaping your heart and spiritual vision? Ask Jesus to give you fresh spiritual sight - to help you see him more clearly, recognise his truth more deeply, and fix your gaze once again on the things that lead you toward his light.
Devote: Jesus, I fix my eyes on you. The light of the world, and the author and perfecter of my faith. Shape my heart, my vision, and my life through your truth and presence.
