Luke 11:37-54
Be still: Lord, still my heart in your presence today. Open my eyes to see you afresh and my ears to hear you speaking through your Word. Amen
Read: Luke 11:37-54
Then the Lord said to him, 'Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.' (v39)
Encounter: We all have that clutter drawer, right? The drawer full of completely miscellaneous stuff. Old batteries. Random keys. Receipts from 2017. Things we don’t know what to do with or can’t be bothered putting back properly. So we just throw them into ‘the drawer’. But it's ok because from the outside, everything still looks tidy…
In this passage, Jesus is addressing the Pharisees. Outwardly, they looked spiritually impressive. They knew Scripture, followed religious rules carefully, prayed publicly, and appeared righteous before others. But Jesus says: 'You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.' They had become more concerned with appearing clean outwardly than allowing God to transform them inwardly.
And honestly, if we look in the mirror, there’s a Pharisee in all of us. We strive in our actions, trying to please God, hoping outward performance will somehow make us acceptable before him and others. We become focused on looking spiritually ‘together’ while inwardly struggling with our own pride, jealousy, greed, bitterness, lust, selfish ambition, or insecurity. Throughout Scripture, God makes it clear that he is not concerned with outward appearance. In 1 Samuel 16, we’re told: 'People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.' He is not searching for polished people who appear perfect on the outside. He desires honesty, humility, and hearts that recognise their need for him.
The Gospel was never an invitation to pretend we are clean. It is an invitation to bring our brokenness into the light and allow Jesus to transform us from the inside out.
Apply: What is sitting in the ‘clutter drawer’ of your heart? Something you’ve been trying to manage outwardly rather than surrender honestly to God? Bring those things before God, knowing he already sees them, and still lovingly invites you closer.
Devote: Lord, thank you that you look at my heart and I don't need to pretend to have it all together. Help me to walk honestly with you and allow your Holy Spirit to transform me from the inside out.
