Hebrews 4:1-13
Be Still: Lord, would you come and speak to me through your word today. Quiet my heart and help me learn how to rest in you.
Read: Hebrews 4:1-13
For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. (v10-11)
Encounter: In a culture that celebrates hustle and productivity, busyness can feel like a badge of honour. A full diary quietly suggests to those around us I’m important, I’m needed, I’m popular. And yet, these verses from our reading challenge that view. The writer of Hebrews doesn’t suggest rest as an optional extra; they frame it as obedience.
'Make every effort to enter that rest’. That sounds almost contradictory – making effort to rest – but it reveals something profound. Rest doesn’t happen by accident. As much as we can crave rest when caught in a busy season of life, rest still must be chosen, protected, and prioritised.
When we don’t accept God’s invitation to rest, we’re not just ignoring our limits; we’re subtly declaring independence from God. Even God rested. To enter God’s rest is to surrender control: it’s choosing not to send that email, not to take on that extra task, not to fill every quiet moment with noise. It’s saying, 'God, I trust you to hold things together while I stop.' Rest becomes more than just ‘a day off’ but an act of faith – trusting that God is still at work even when we are not.
Apply: Has busyness become an idol in your life? What might you need to say no to, in order to say 'yes' to resting with God this week?
Devote: Lord, teach me how to rest in you. Help me surrender control, trust your provision, and obey your invitation to be still. May my rest reflect my faith in you as Lord.
