John 14:15-31
Be Still: I love you, Lord. Thank you for your presence in and around me right now. Holy Spirit, give me eyes to see you and ears to hear what you’re saying.
Read: John 14:15-31
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (v26)
Encounter: The Holy Spirit is sometimes thought of as the forgotten person of the Trinity. However, He may, in a practical sense, be the most active person for you and me. In this passage, he is described as our teacher and advocate. Advocate in the Greek is parakletos, meaning a legal aide, counsel for defence, or one called to your side.
Have you ever had to go to court? I sincerely hope not, but if you have, I hazard a guess you wouldn’t dare go without a lawyer. In what seems like every crime movie, the suspect in the police station interrogation room ideclares - 'I want to speak to my lawyer!'
For spiritual matters of life, we need a lawyer. The good news is we’ve got the best lawyer in the world: the Holy Spirit. He is for you, and arguing for your case. Whatever the situation, problem, or circumstance, the Holy Spirit is our best defence and our strongest suit.
Apply: How many times have I tried to solve life’s problems on my own? A lot. Why is prayer sometimes the last thing on my mind when I’m questioned in the proverbial interrogation room? Why aren't my first words 'Holy Spirit come'? Next time I’m faced with a sticky situation, I’m resolute not to be anxious or afraid. Instead, I’m going to say, 'Holy Spirit I need your help. Come to my defence and show me the way I should go.'
Devote: Holy Spirit, thank you that you live in me and are with me. I ask you now, come and show me the way I should go.
