Colossians 1:15-29

Be Still: Lord Jesus, Word made flesh, open our hearts to recognise your glory and your grace. Fix our eyes on you as we read your holy Word. Amen

Read: Colossians 1:15-29

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. (v19)

Encounter: This passage lifts our eyes to the greatness of Christ. Paul describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. The one through whom and for whom all things exist. These words remind me that Christ is not simply part of my life; he is the foundation of everything. The same Lord who created and sustains the universe is also the head of the church and the one who reconciles us through his Cross.

What strikes me is the contrast Paul describes. Once we were alienated from God, separated by sin and hostile in our thinking. Yet Christ’s death has opened the way for reconciliation. The one who holds creation together has made peace through his blood. The scale of Christ’s power makes his grace even more astonishing.

Paul then speaks about his own calling to proclaim Christ and present everyone mature in him. The goal of the Christian life is not simply belief but transformation. Christ is not distant, he lives within us, the hope of glory. The Christian life is sustained by his power working within us.

Apply: This passage challenges us to consider whether Christ truly holds first place in our lives. It is easy to make him important without making him central. When our priorities become crowded, Christ can be pushed to the margins instead of remaining the foundation.

Today we are invited to place Christ again at the centre. Because he holds all things together, he is able to hold together the details and pressures of our lives. Maturity in faith grows as we depend on his strength rather than our own.

Devote: Lord Jesus, you are the centre of all things and the hope within me. Help me keep you first in my life. Strengthen me with your power and shape me into maturity in you.
