Luke 21:29–38
Be Still: Faithful God, prepare us to receive your word with joy and obedience. Amen.
Read: Luke 21:29–38
Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware. (v34)
Encounter: No one wants to be described as a dull person. We want to be known as vibrant, alive and full of energy. Yet Jesus uses this kind of language to describe something far more serious than personality. He is speaking about the condition of the heart. Why is it often acceptable to drift into spiritual dullness, yet we dread to be known as a dull person in other aspects of our life?
In this verse, Jesus gives a clear and personal warning. He names the things that slowly dull spiritual sensitivity: excess, distraction, anxiety, and the pull of earthly living. None of these appear destructive at first glance, but over time they can quietly shape the heart away from attentiveness to God. The danger is not usually sudden collapse, but gradual drift. A heart that was once alert becomes weighed down. Prayer becomes irregular. Awareness of God becomes faint.
Jesus is not speaking to condemn, but to wake his followers up to what can so easily happen unnoticed. Yet embedded in his warning is also direction. He is not simply telling us what to avoid, but what to pursue. The call is to watchfulness and prayer. Spiritual alertness is not maintained by willpower alone, but by a life anchored in God’s presence. The contrast is clear: dullness comes through absorption in the temporary; clarity and vitality come through communion with the eternal.
Apply: This passage invites honest self-examination. Not in a condemning way, but in a truthful one. What is shaping the tone of your inner life right now? What is slowly numbing spiritual attentiveness? The invitation here is to take stock. What habits, patterns, or distractions are forming spiritual dullness? And just as importantly, what practices need to be strengthened again?
This is not about perfection, but about awareness and return. Jesus calls his people to live awake, attentive and engaged.
Devote: Lord Jesus, awaken my heart where it has grown dull. Give me clarity to see what is draining my spiritual life and courage to let it go.
