Luke 22:1–13
Be Still: Father, as we pause before you, calm our minds and soften our hearts. Help us to see more clearly the truth of Christ. Amen.
Read: Luke 22:1–13
Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread arrived, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed. (v 7)
Encounter: These verses sit in a moment of tension. On one side, there is the growing plot against Jesus, as betrayal begins to take shape through Judas Iscariot. On the other side, there is preparation for the Passover meal, a moment deeply rooted in Israel’s story of deliverance and identity. The Passover was never just a meal. It was a living reminder of rescue. It looked back to the night when God delivered his people from slavery in Egypt, marking their freedom through the sacrifice of a lamb. Blood on the doorposts signified protection and salvation. It was a defining moment of liberation from physical bondage and oppression.
Yet in this passage, something deeper is unfolding. Jesus is entering the Passover narrative not merely as a participant but as its fulfilment. The timing is not accidental. As the Passover lamb is prepared, the Lamb of God is moving toward his own sacrifice. What was once a sign pointing backward now becomes a sign pointing forward. Jesus is about to transform the meaning of deliverance itself. His death will not rescue people from Egypt, but from sin, death, and spiritual separation from God.
Jesus, the perfect Lamb, will willingly give himself. Not under compulsion, but in obedience and love. What begins in Exodus as a shadow is fulfilled in Christ as reality.
Apply: This passage invites us to pause and reflect on the weight of what Jesus’ sacrifice means. It is easy to become familiar with the language of the Cross and lose sight of its depth. Yet here we are reminded that deliverance came at a cost.
Take time today to consider this. Where has Christ brought freedom into your life? What patterns, burdens, or guilt has he carried on your behalf? Allow this to shape how you live today. The Lamb has been sacrificed; therefore, a new life is now possible.
Devote: Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the Lamb who was willing to be sacrificed for my sake. May my life reflect the reality that I have been redeemed by you.
