John 6:41-51

Be Still: Lord, I thank you for this moment in your presence. Would you open my eyes to more of who you are, my ears to hear all that you want to say and my heart to the truths you want to reveal. Amen

Read: John 6:41-51

I am the bread of life. (v 48)

Encounter: When I was younger, probably like most, I hated eating my vegetables. I would spend countless evenings debating with any adult who had the patience to engage with me. I remember one evening having a heated conversation with my grandad explaining passionately how another bite would tip me over the edge. I was full - and didn’t need or want anything else.

In today’s passage Jesus explains that he is the bread of life - that he totally and completely satisfies and there is nothing we need apart from him. There is fullness in him, nothing else can fulfil us in the same way!

On that same evening with my grandad, he went into the kitchen and came back with ice-cream! My eyes widened but he then said, 'I thought you were full.' I explained that my stomach was split into two sections, one for main course meals and another section for dessert which was empty. It’s funny how quickly a change of circumstances led me to create space for something that wasn’t that good for me.

No matter how long we’ve known Jesus, so quickly the pace of life, or changes in circumstances, can lead to us believing the lie that we need other things to make us whole. For some it may be success, material possessions, relationships, wealth, or affirmations. Whatever it looks like for you, this passage is a reminder that it is Jesus alone who completely satisfies. He is enough!

Apply: Are there any distractions or habits that are keeping you from fully relying on Jesus daily? When life is hard, and feelings of uncertainty arise, who or what do you turn to first? What would it look like to go to Jesus first?

Devote: Lord, I thank you that you are all I need. Show me the ways I can lean into deeper dependence on you.
