John 6:52-59

Be Still: Lord, I thank you for this moment in your presence. Would you open my eyes to more of who you are, my ears to hear all that you want to say and my heart to the truths you want to reveal. Amen

Read: John 6:52-59

How can this man give us his flesh to eat? (v 52).

Encounter: In today’s passage we read of those in the synagogue trying to come to terms with Jesus’ teaching, and understandably there’s a lot of concern and confusion. I get it though -- a man teaching that his flesh and blood should be consumed, what is going on?

As I was reading this, I was reminded to acknowledge that, without the Spirit of God, there is so much of our faith that can be difficult to comprehend. We can become so familiar with the stories we read in Scripture and the things that Jesus says and does, that we sometimes skip over the wonder and mystery.

There is a place for the rational; however, sometimes 'camping in the logical' can make us miss the spiritual truths that the Lord, by his Spirit, wants to reveal to us. Instead of letting mystery become a barrier to our understanding of our faith, there is an invitation to seek deeper revelation. It’s not something we have to strive for, but something in which the Holy Spirit wants to partner us.

I read these words in 'The Awe of God' by John Bevere: 'When we see Him face-to-face in all His awesome holiness and blazing glory, it will seem incredible to us that we ever had a casual thought in relation to him.' I don’t want to wait until then to have that revelation, but rather want to try my best to live a life that seeks now to be in awe of all the Lord is.

Apply: Spend a moment in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal something new about the Lord’s character. Write down how you are going to live in response to that truth this week.

Devote: Lord, by your Spirit, would you lead me into deeper understanding of your Word. Help me to lean into the wonder of who you are and what you do.
