Luke 23:13–25

Be still: Lord Jesus, quiet my mind and open my heart today. Help me lay down my own expectations, to see you clearly and to follow you faithfully as I read and engage with your Word. Amen.

For the third time, he spoke to them: 'Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have him punished and then release him.' 

But with loud shouts, they insistently demanded that he be crucified and their shouts prevailed. So Pilate decided to grant their demand. (vv22-24)

Encounter: Peer pressure is and has always been a powerful force in the world. I know it’s influenced me to make decisions I regret later, but even though I knew it was wrong, the momentum of a group sometimes makes it incredibly hard to speak up or walk away.  

And this is what we’re seeing in this passage. Both Pilate and Herod, key leaders in the Roman Empire, knew Jesus was innocent. Pilate explicitly states three times that he finds no basis for a death sentence and yet, he’s confronted by a furious mob. The chief priests, leaders and the crowd are not interested in justice; they’re fuelled by a collective anger. They shout for the release of Barabbas, a man imprisoned for insurrection and murder, and demand that the innocent Jesus be crucified.  

Luke notes that 'their shouts prevailed', with Pilate surrendering to the pressure of the crowd, trading ultimate justice for temporary political peace. It’s easy to look at this crowd with judgment, but if we’re honest, we often face similar pressures. We might not be shouting in a literal mob, but the cultural currents around us constantly demand our conformity. The world tells us who to praise, who to condemn and what values to prioritise. In the face of all the noise, it takes incredible courage to stand with Jesus, especially when following him means going against the crowd. Jesus chose the Cross, enduring the mob's rejection, so that we might be set free. 

Apply: Where are you feeling the pressure to conform to the crowd? Is it in your workplace, your social circle, or online? Take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to stand firm in your faith, even when the voices around you are loud. 

Devote: Lord, forgive me for the times I have stayed silent or followed the crowd. Give me the boldness to stand up for your truth and to follow you faithfully.
